Game Review - Dishonored

Second review coming in, and this time, its one of my favorite game.

Dishonored is a first-person action adventure with a great touch of stealth-assassin element, which is the theme the game itself. Developed by Arkane Studio and published by Bethesda, who is also well known for its previous game, like the Elder Scroll series.

Dishonored set in a world where a deadly plague is causing chaos on the city of Dunwall, the capital of Gristol. Corvo Attano, the royal guardian of the Empress. Corvo suppose to reporting from his investigation, but he then later blamed with the death, or rather an assassination of the empress, that he suppose to protect.

Your first mission, depicting a scene of Dunwall Tower where the Empress is.

The assassination is a conspiracy, and Corvo is just a scapegoat for the true villain. Corvo being put in the jail, but later on escape with the help of his allies. He then prepare the plan to revenge and to cleanse his name from the frame of being a murderer of the empress.

Now Corvo plan to resist the corrupted government, he became an assassin, for revenge, but yet also to take back once again what truly belong to him.

Corvo not only aided by the resistance fighters, but also by a mysterious entity known as The Outsider, which act as some kind of powerful supernatural figure, which in short, a God.

The Outsider give Corvo various abilities, start from teleporting, stopping time, to controlling living being. However, he isn't the only one chosen by the entity, as there is more to discover hidden in the world, that lead to much more conspiracy and dark secrets.

One of Corvo's ability that he receive from The Outsider; Windblast.

The power Corvo have add the role-playing element to the game, as that abilities is upgradeable by using a Rune, which often reside on secret places on the gameplay. There also a small Bone Charm which have their own effect and benefits.

There is much more than just steampunk element on the game, but also rather more to be a classic old english with a touch of innovative technology and fantasy setting.

Use an old english like theme, then added steampunk and supernatural feel, its Dishonored!

Dunwall, Gristol, or maybe the whole world is filled with unique steampunk-like mechanic, start from the transportation, alarm, weapons, to even electric plasma arc that will burn any unwanted guest to crisp.

Dunwall isn't the only nation, there is a big alliance of small islands, and one big (seriously big, or the world is just too small) continent known as Pandyssia, which never shown. It only mentioned but pique an interest in me, yet I must took a hard time researching it with such small rare hints.

Map of the world, showing how small your countries is compared to Pandyssia.

Other than that, did I mentioned the creatures? Rats that infected by the plague are swarming people like piranha, whale have natural white oil that are used in technology just like our oil, and there is also a weird clam-like mollusk that similar in form of gigantic flower bud.

The plague itself is something else. Not only its hardly cured, or even prevented, it also widespread to every sector of the nations. Its basically a top priority, and can turned people into a heart-wrenching state known as Weepers.

I would call them zombie if not because they still have their thought and feelings. Some theory even said that they aren't dangerous at all, and only seek help from the people that they see. However, their coughing and all only cause harm to you, and you also can't do anything to help them.

Anything in Dishonored is in harmony, while the setting is totally in discord and corruption. There is many unique culture you could learn, various fractions start from in the government to thugs, many invention of science, and bizarre fantastic creatures.

To be honest, I want to play more with this game, especially the DLC. There is a Dunwall City Trials,  Void Walker's Arsenal, Knife of Dunwall, and The Brigmoire Witches.

On Knife of Dunwall and The Brigmoire Witches, you play in a real alternate story, not just a challenge or extra bonuses. In both new story, you play as Daud, a high class assassin who are the real murderer of the Empress and also a supernatural power user like Corvo.

In both game, you decide the fate of Daud and his quest to seek redemption. In the Brigmoire Witches, which is one of the most interesting DLC ever, you are against Delilah, a powerful witch that are the key of Daud's redemption.

Daud and Delilah in one of the DLC cover art.

The event of both story is set before Daud confront Corvo, so its not a spin-off or alternate ending, but a real canon story in the same storyline. What happened next is up to Corvo, in mean that you decide his final fate in the original game anyway.

Will Corvo ever be able to achieve his goal? What he will do with revenge? What kind of truth will be revealed? Discover everything in the dark fantasy sci-fi assassin game of Dishonored.

Yeah I put more effort to game that I really seriously play and like. Anyway its time for the rating.

Story and Concept

A perfect innovative and satisfying setting. The story is marvelous, start from the amazing steampunk technologies, unique culture and everything in it, to the supernatural side with The Outsider and everything involved.

The developers and everyone who make this put a really, really great effort in this. They have awesome inspirations, and even do many measurement to make sure even trivial things like morphology of the game is set right.

The story is similar to Skyrim (they have the same developer anyway), where there is way more secret about the world that you can uncover by yourself if you pay more attention to trivial things such as conversation and obtainable notes. (after I think about it, its also sound like Silent Hill lol)

I really appreciate everything they put in here, and I enjoy it. In simple world, I love the story, so I won't spoil much and just give a perfect 5 star.

Gameplay and System

I amaze on how smooth the graphic is. Despite on how simple the art edges is, it still make the game realistic, mixed with the unique art style, resulting an enjoyable gameplay.

If we talk about all the action, Dishonored is very immersive with its first-person stealth assassin action. Its immersive enough to bring the atmosphere to be felt by the gamer.

The mix of stealth action with fantastic power is something else to behold. The fun of having awesome power in a realistic game like Dishonored is like having Kratos playing Resident Evil, extremely fun. (doesn't mean you really overpowered though)

The most highly awarded part of the gameplay is the fact there is soooo many things to discover! Start from the info about the worlds, dark hidden secret like witchcraft and legends, to even deeper things about each character that you can discover by reading their mind or listening to conversations.

You gain what you do, and your decision will change the ending. So, there is many way to achieve your objective, way more than what you could think.

Graphic and Animation

I'm not saying its bad, not at all. Its just not perfect, and thats exactly what make the game awesome.

The mix of realistic, dark grease animation, then added artistic greasily dry-brush-like style resulting a great graphic to be feast. Kind of similar to Borderlands in my opinion.

Its not as realistic as Watch Dogs, Infamous, Thief, and such games. Rather, the contemporary mix of the art is a perfection, while its not perfect at the same time.

Enough philosophical time, its good.

Characters and Fractions

In this part, Dishonored is similar to game like Metal Gear Solid series, where the setting is mostly realistic, but added fantasy setting to make certain special characters have different ability than the rest.

Dishonored have various characters, and even the most ordinary one, can be more interesting than what you thought if you pay attention to them.

Other than just the commoners, there is a notable characters like Daud, Sokolov, Slackjaw, and "Granny Rags".

To find more, just try to play around with people around you. Dishonored support that kind of silly act, seriously, there is so many choice to try.

Overall Rating

Dishonored is not your usual stealth assassin. It combine so many features, mixed together perfectly in a bowl known as alternate world that are very well thought, in even the most smallest details.

There is so many to discover, so many to try, so many possibilities and secrets. The information about the world is crucial but very scarce, thus you must play around searching about information on your own.

With the stunning immersive gameplay, you can took your own decision and carved your path. May it be that there will be no mercy and destruction everywhere, or you use your brain and solve things carefully with plans, or maybe you want to use your power to discover new possibilities to unveil? Everything on your own to decide.

Revenge Solve Everything... well, that's what they said.

Phew i'm sure write a lot for my fav game! :D

okay, what next I wonder.... Metal Gear Solid 5? Mass Effect? Lost Planet? Thief? Titanfall? Half-Life? LEGEND OF ZELDA? lol

anyway i'm on mood to share some extra images, so I make a mini gallery below here! Enjoy!
